    • It won't die.

I have a 2009. Bought it at 170000 kms. Now it has 250,000 kms. The oil cooler and transmission cooler lines rusted so I replaced those. An oxygen sensor went. I just now see the water pump is leaking and the ventilation fan has a bad connection. The right rear door has a hinge that is broken. The emergency brake cable rusted out. And the airbag light has been on for four years. But this van always starts. Never let me down. Even on the coldest Canadian morning. I have put only about $500 in repairs to drive this vehicle from 170,000 to 250,000. It needs a lot of work but it still gets me to my job and back. If you do not want to go broke fixing cargo vans, do NOT buy a euro-style van. Stick to the GM products. These things are not pretty, they are crude, but they cost nothing to keep on the road.

I am currently the second owner of this vehicle. I bought it when it had 40k miles and use it for my mobile detail business. It has great power, acceleration and braking. Not so great on gas mileage, but it's a V8 so it's expected. If you take good care of this van, it'll last a long time. Very happy with Chevy
    • Rented it for a family trip

So I have rented passenger vans for family trips for a few years now. This was my first time renting the Chevrolet Express, as for other trips, we've always had the Ford Econoline vans. When compared to the Fords, this van is huge step up. It did not bog down on hills and was mostly able to merge at speed onto the highway. It also had a much better ride quality and seat comfort than the Econolines. It held the road better as well, with much less sway from changing lanes, and much less body roll when cornering. All in all, I felt much *safer* when driving the Chevy than I did the Fords. Fuel consumption was pretty good for that type of vehicle. Driving it home from the rental agency, it got over 20 miles per gallon. That's impressive for a 12 passenger van! However, it dropped to 17 miles per gallon on the highway once it was loaded with passengers. Still quite respectable, and a full two miles per gallon better than the Fords that I have driven before. The wing mirrors took a little bit of getting used to, particularly on the right side of the vehicle, because the usual convex mirror (the ones that are usually marked with "objects in mirror are closer than they appear") is replaced by the same kind of mirror that is usually on the driver's side. It took me a while to find the right placement that actually gave me the view I needed for changing lanes on the highway. The main wing mirrors could be adjusted by electric controls on the driver's side door, but the additional blind spot mirrors could only be adjusted manually, so that was a bit of a pain. The blind spots are always a concern with this kind of vehicle, and in that respect, the Chevy really wasn't any better or worse than the Econolines. Parking, however, was much improved by the addition of a back-up camera that pops up in the center mirror when you shift into reverse. The driver controls were basically as bog standard as any typical American truck and were easy to find and figure out. There were no surprises there. Brakes worked about as good as you could expect. Obviously, it takes longer to stop than a car, just because of its size, so make sure you leave a big gap ahead of you for safety. The downside: the automatic gearbox was pretty awful at slower speeds. Sure, you have a manual mode to select gears yourself, and there are six to choose from, but it really didn't do anything to mitigate just how unresponsive the van was at takeoff. Once I'd get going fast enough for the torque converter to lock up, the van became noticeably more responsive, so it did fine on the highway and climbing hills on the higher speed roads I traveled over, but if you have to drive the van a lot in the city, don't expect to keep up with traffic much unless you want to really guzzle the gas. From 0 to 25, it felt like a manual car does with a bad clutch, all revs and little movement. There were a few times that I even wondered if I had knocked it into neutral without realizing it, it was so bad! It's a shame that Chevy doesn't allow these to be ordered with a manual gearbox, because I feel like a traditional manual gearbox would've made for a much less sluggish driving experience around town. The actual shifts were no better or worse than a typical automatic gearbox. You could feel them, but they weren't excessively jerky. It was also quite rattly over the bumps. The rear double doors in particular were very squeaky any time you'd be going over a rough patch of the road, but it really wasn't any worse than the Fords in that respect. All in all, I liked the van enough that I will take a Chevy over a Ford when given the option, as it felt more stable and had more power, but the transmission leaves a lot to be desired.
