LaSalle is a small city that's home to a rich culture and welcoming community. LaSalle borders on the Illinois River and was founded as a port on the Illinois & Michigan Canal in the early 19th century. Today, the city is home to several National Historic Landmarks, and it has plenty of fun things to do whether you're from the area or simply visiting.

History

Named for the explorer Robert de LaSalle, the city started as a port on the canal that connects Lake Michigan to the Illinois River. Boats traveling from as far as New Orleans brought goods up to Chicago, and LaSalle was a popular stopping point along the way. In the second half of the 19th century, LaSalle established itself as an important center for zinc production. After Prohibition ended in 1933, LaSalle was home to dozens of saloons and gambling establishments and became known as "Little Reno'; until a crackdown in the 1950s cleaned up the city.

Landmarks

LaSalle is home to numerous National Historic Structures, including Hotel Kaskaskia, the LaSalle City Building, and the 57-room Victorian-era Hegeler Carus Mansion. Near downtown, visitors can get a taste of LaSalle's 19th-century Illinois & Michigan Canal era with a mule-pulled ride on the Volunteer, a replica canal boat. The canal is also the subject of a nearby visitor's center and museum.

Things to Do

Visitors who love hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities will want to check out the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail. This scenic trail follows the old canal towpath for more than 60 miles from LaSalle to Rockdale. Another prime recreational site near LaSalle is Starved Rock State Park, a spectacular attraction that features bald eagles, sandstone canyons, and winter ice climbing on the park's numerous waterfalls. Other fun destinations include Pirate's Cay Indoor Waterpark and the races at LaSalle Speedway.
