Types of Warranties | Ottawa, IL

When you buy a new - or sometimes even certified pre-owned or used - vehicle, you will likely get a comprehensive warranty. This is also commonly referred to as a bumper-to-bumper warranty. But what is a comprehensive warranty, how does it differ from a powertrain warranty, and do you need an extended warranty?

Extended Warranties

Though you will get a powertrain warranty and a comprehensive warranty with your new vehicle, you may also want to consider an extended warranty, which could cover some of those extras that are not covered by the comprehensive bumper-to-bumper plan. To determine if an extended warranty is right for you, speak with your salesperson at Sierra Volkswagen when purchasing your new VW. These warranties are typically beneficial if you are not prepared to cover major out-of-pocket expenses for otherwise uncovered issues - expenses that can easily reach $2,000 to $3,000.

Powertrain Warranties

When you purchase your new car, you typically don't just get a comprehensive warranty. You also get a powertrain warranty. The comprehensive warranty covers (almost) everything except for the powertrain.  Powertrain warranties cover the powertrain, of course. This includes anything that powers your new car - typically the engine, driveshaft, and transmission.

Powertrain warranty plans typically last five years/60,000 miles, and the same is true for powertrain warranties that come with Volkswagen vehicles.

Comprehensive Warranties

Comprehensive warranties are just what you might expect - pretty darn comprehensive. These warranties tend to cover everything in your vehicle, with a few minor exclusions depending on the specific make or model. These warranties typically cover fuel systems, air conditioning, and electronics. However, common elements that are not covered include body panels, interior trims, and glass; brakes and tires; and other parts that are subject to normal wear and tear like the clutch, headlights, turn signals, and brake lights.

Comprehensive warranty plans typically last three years/36,000 miles or four years/50,000 miles. Volkswagen vehicles come with a four-year, 50,000-mile warranty.
